The NEIU Chapter of the
Society of Physics Students
has elected new officers. Congratulations to President Omid Ahmadi,
Vice President Martin Senica, Secretary Kathy Stefantos and Treasurer Chris Maag.
A proposal by Professors Anderson, Gidea & Rutschman
to establish a Research Community at NEIU was one of the
four NEIU proposals to win approval. The research community
will be centered around computational dynamics in physics and
populations. For more information please contact Drs.
Marian Gidea, David Rutschman or Greg Anderson.
The National Science Foundation, Division of Chemistry has announced that
they will fund one Center for Undergraduate Research (URC). This center was selected
from 60 proposed centers. While NSF originally intended to fund upto 5 centers after
reviewing the proposals they have decided to fund only one in this round.
Co-PI Pratibha Varma-Nelson is Professor and Chair, Departments of Chemistry, Earth Science,
and Physics at Northeastern Illinois University.
NEIU research in the application of Supercomputers in Physics using a
Beowulf Linux Cluster has been presented at the Student Research &
Creative Activities Symposium on April 16, 2004. Student Todor Ozegovic
discussed architecture and programming techniques of the Supercomputer
Cluster built for the NEIU Physics Department. Ozegovic is curently working
with Dr. Anderson on research in the field of grand unified theories.
NEIU physics student Gloria Rivera also presented a poster on "Anomalous Skin Depth in Metals"
at the symposium.
