A combinatorial identity and its application to normal distributions

Dr. Aurel Stan

We first present a combinatorial identity. Then we introduce three operators, called the creation, neutral, and annihilation operators, for any random variable having finite moments of any order. Finally we use the combinatorial identity to characterize the standard normal distribution in terms of the neutral operator and the commutator between the annihilation and creation operators.
