Problem Sets
Weekly problem sets are assigned here solutions will typically be posted by the following weekend. Problem Sets should be completed by the following week, but will not be collected. You are expected to be able to work the problems without the aid of the solutions. The solutions are provided so that you can check your work after you have completed the problem sets. Problem set assignments and solutions can be found here. In addition, solutions will be posted outside my office F146 Tech. The quizzes administered in discussion sections will be based on these problem sets.
Discussion Sections & Quizzes
Check the time and place for individual discussion sections here Short quizzes are administered during discussion sections. Quizzes will be given every week, with the exception of the fist week of class and weeks where there is a midterm. Quizzes are based on the previous week's problem set. The two lowest quiz grades will be dropped. Missed quizzes are counted as zero. There will be no quiz make-ups. Discussion sections do not meet during the first week of the quarter, and they do not meet on weeks where there is a midterm.
Laboratory Sections
Labs begin the second week of the quarter. According to our Department regulations, students who fail to complete the required number of laboratories will fail the course. The Laboratory Manager is Dr. Art Schmidt. Please see the handout or this link for further information.
Exams
This course has two one-hour midterm exams and a two-hour final. The Exams are largely based on material from lectures and problems similar to those found in the weekly assignments. A Sample exam from past years is available here.
Grading
The final grade will be based on:
Quizzes (1/6), Laboratory (1/6), Two midterms (1/6) + (1/6), Final Exam (1/3).
Add/Drops
Registration for each section is controlled by the department to insure roughly equitable class size. Send students who need to change their lecture or discussion section to David Taylor. Students who wish to change their laboratory section should see Art Schmidt in F214.
Make-ups
Midterm make-ups will be allowed only on the recommendation of the Office of Undergraduate Studies and Advising, and only for circumstances clearly beyond your control. In all cases you must supply adequate documentation. See also the WCAS regulations on missed final examinations. There will be no quiz make-ups. The two lowest quiz grades will be dropped. Missed quizzes are counted as zero. Students wishing to make up a Laboratory section should contact Dr. Art Schmidt directly.
