Equipment listed is for each of eight (8) identical student table stations unless otherwise noted .

Note 1:  Set up a current demonstration table with these items:

Note 1: Set the current limit on the Power Supply to about half of the maximum.

Note 1: Move computer keyboards, mice, monitors out of the way if possible. Computers are not used for any more labs and may be turned off.

Lab 12: Atomic Spectra

PHYS 204 Lab 12: Atomic Spectra Note 1: Put out 8 Deuterium sources and a variety of Argon, Helium, Mercury Vapor, etc. to be distributed among the lab tables.
Note 2:  Don't use the slit; it makes it hard to line up the spectral line sources with the slit so you can see any light.
Note 3: Note down the light source (He, D2, Ne, etc) on a piece of masking tape on the bench.
Note 4:  Allow 3+ hours for setup.
Note 5:  Set up a demonstration consisting of 2 or more lasers (different colors), lab jacks, and the "Cornell" multiple diffraction grating/slit screen.
Note 6:  Use care when putting the Diffraction Grating in the Test Tube Clamp. The Test Tube Clamp has a screw thread that should be pointed in toward the wall, not out where it can poke somebody's face.
Note 7:  Place the screen a little less than a meter from the aisle-side bench edge, to give it a good distance for viewing.
Note 8:  Put out the two incandescent sources on variacs, set them up on the two back benches along with the atomic spectra sources.

Lab 13: Radioactive Half-Life

Note 1: Immediately before class, take 3 Cs-137 sources and elute bottles from S231 and move them to classroom
Note 2: Assist the instructor by doling out the radioactive solution for the students, then disposing of it when the experiment is done. Allow at least 4 minutes between samples from the same source, as it needs time to regenerate barium.
Note 3: The eluting solution is just a weak salt (NaCl) water solution. After several half-lives, no appreciable radiation or hazard remains in the liquid.
Note 4: Have a 600ml beaker ready for disposal of liquid.
